SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University hockey team went home-and-home with the Lake Superior State University Lakers this weekend. NMU swept its first weekend series of the season with the 3-1 win over the Lakers at Taffy Abel Arena on Saturday night. With the win the Wildcats have won its past three games in a row and four of the past five. NMU improves to 5-9-0 overall on the season and 4-8-0 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). The Lakers fall to 2-9-1 and 0-6-0 respectively.
Dan Eves gave the Lakers the early 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 5:27 of the first period. Mark Olver scored the first of his two goals for the night on the power play at 19:08 of the period to tie the game. Matt Siddall and Nick Sirota assisted on Olver’s second goal of the season.
The 1-1 deadlock would hold up until the third period when the ‘Cats turned the light on twice. Gregor Hanson scored what turned out to be the game-winner at 9:31 for his third marker of the season, which made the score 2-1. Matt Butcher and Ray Kaunisto assisted. Olver made the score 3-1 when he scored his third goal of the season and second of the night at 11:08. Billy Smith and Blake Cosgrove assisted.
NMU had a slight edge on shots at 24-20. Each side scored a power-play goal on the night. NMU had four power play opportunities while LSSU had six. Reid Ellingson picked up his third win in a row as he turned away 19 shots. Brian Mahoney-Wilson had 21 saves for the game.
Next week (Nov. 30-Dec. 1)the ‘Cats will face the Nanooks of Alaska for a CCHA series in Fairbanks.
