STEVENS POINT, Wis. – It took the Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team a little over eight minutes into the game to make its first basket against UW-Stevens Point Monday night. The Wildcats were defeated in its first real game of the season by a score of 77-52. UWSP improves to 2-0 on the season while NMU is 0-1.
Ryan Reichel made the first basket for the ‘Cats at 11:34 to make the score 17-3. The Pointers would extend its lead to as many as 26 points in the first half. Right before the half the ‘Cats scored eight points in a row by Jerard Ajami, Tyler Kazmierkoski, Reichel and Sebastien Salois to cut the score to 40-23 after 20 minutes of play. NMU shot 29.2 percent from the floor for the first half on 7-24. The home team did not seem to have any problems making baskets as the Pointers were 16-26 from the floor for 61.5 percent.
The second half the home team held a double-digit lead for the entire 20 minutes of play. NMU did cut it to 13 (51-38) when Jake Suardini made a jumper at 13:32. Kazmierkoski made the count 62-47 when he made a layup with 6:32 left in the game. That would be as close as the ‘Cats would get on the night.
NMU did shoot a bit better in the second half at 48 percent (12-25) and for the game the ‘Cats shot38.8 percent (19-49). The ‘Cats were 6-21 from the arc for 28.6 percent. From the charity stripe, NMU was 8-14 for 57.1 percent. The Pointers cooled off in the second half by shooting 48.3 percent (14-29) and ended the game at 54.5 percent (30-55). From the three-point line the Pointers were 12-28 for 42.9 percent. UWSP missed one free throw in six trips to the line (83.3 percent). The Pointers won the battle off the glass at 32-25.
Three ‘Cats ended the night with 10 or more points. Kazmierkoski had a team-high 12 points and four rebounds. Salois contributed 11 points and four rebounds. Suardini had 10 points. Ajami had a game-high five assists. Pete Rortvedt led the Pointers with a game-high 19 points.
The ‘Cats will stay on the road as they will play at the UM-Duluth Tournament after Thanksgiving. Friday (Nov. 23) NMU will face MSU-Moorhead and then the Bulldogs of UM-Duluth on Saturday (Nov. 24).
