BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Once again Nick Sirota scored a short-handed goal which helped the Northern Michigan University hockey team spit its weekend series with the Bowling Green State University Falcons on Saturday night, 3-2, at the BGSU Ice Arena.
With the win the Wildcats improve to 3-9-0 overall on the season and 2-8-0 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). The Falcons fall to 6-3-0 and 5-2-0 respectively.
Sirota’s 10th goal of the season came in the opening period at 8:07. Jared Brown assisted. For Sirota it was his third short-handed goal of the season. As a team NMU currently has five short-handed goals on the season. BGSU would tie the game a little over a minute later when Kevin Schmidt scored a power-play goal at 9:11.
Phil Fox scored his fourth goal of the season at 8:17 of the third period to give NMU the 2-1 lead. Andrew Fernandez assisted. At 13:01 BGSU tied the game up again at two-all on a goal by Tomas Petruska. The lead would last less than a minute as Ray Kaunisto scored the game-winner for his third marker of the season at 14:00. Matt Butcher and Derek May assisted.
Reid Ellingson picked up his first collegiate win with 30 saves. Jimmy Spratt went the distance for BGSU and ended the game with 23 saves. The Falcons held a 32-26 shot advantage. BGSU was 1-5 on the power play while NMU was 0-4.
Next weekend the ‘Cats will go home-and-home with Lake Superior State. The puck will drop both nights at 7:35 p.m. Friday’s (Nov. 23) game will be in Marquette then it will move to the Soo on Saturday (Nov. 24).
