Nick Sirota Tried To Make It Close
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Northern Michigan University hockey team made a good run at the Bowling Green State University Falcons on Friday night at the BGSU Ice Arena. Down 3-0 after 40 minutes of play, thanks to three first-period goal, the Wildcats scored back-to-back goals in the third period to cut the lead to 3-2. But the Falcons added a goal later in the period for the 4-2 win.
NMU is 2-9-0 overall and 1-8-0 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). BGSU improves to 6-2-0 and 5-1-0 respectively.
Derek Whitmore scored three of the four goals for the Falcons on the night. He scored a power-play goal at 2:28 of the first period for the 1-0 lead. Tim Maxwell made it 2-0 at 8:30 before Whitmore scored his second goal of the period at 16:42.
Nick Sirota scored his second short-handed goal of the season at 2:43 of the third period to make the score 3-1. The goal was unassisted. NMU now has four short-handed goals on the season. Less than two minutes later he scored his team-high ninth goal of the season on the power play at 4:07 to get the ‘Cats within one (3-2). Mark Olver assisted on the goal. Whitmore added his third goal of the night on the power play at 16:56 for the final score.
The Falcons had 30 shots on the night to 19 for the ‘Cats. Each side had four power-play opportunities as NMU scored once and BGSU twice with the extra skater. Brian Stewart got the nod in goal and responded with 26 saves. Nick Eno for the Falcons had 17 saves in the win.
The two teams will play the back end of the weekend series on Saturday night (Nov. 17).
