Wildcats Drop Season Opener
ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team opened the 2007-08 season at the Concordia-St. Paul Tournament on Friday afternoon. NMU dropped its season opener to Augustana by a score of 67-57. Augustana ranked 22nd in the WBCA Top 25 is now 3-1 on the season while the Wildcats are 0-1.
Augustana controlled the entire game. NMU did tie the score at two-all when Cassi Rushford hit a jumper less than a minute into the game. NMU would get to within one several times in the half. Kelsey Deacon hit a three-pointer at 16:20 to cut the lead to 9-8. Augustana held a 17-10 lead before Allison Carroll made back-to-back layups and Rushford added a layup to make the score 17-16 with 9:47 left in the half. Augustana would build the lead back up and end the first half up 29-25. For the first 20 minutes of play, the ‘Cats were 10-32 from the floor (31.3 percent) which included 3-13 from the arc (23.1 percent). NMU made half of its free throws (2-4).
Carroll scored the first basket of the second half (29-27) before Augustana went on a 16-2 run over a five minute span to make the score 45-29 with a little over 14 minutes left in the game. With the half about half way gone the ‘Cats chipped away at the lead to get it down to single-digits (59-51) with about five minutes left in the game thanks to a Carroll layup. With a little over two minutes left, Erin Powers canned a jumper to cut the lead down to five points (62-57). Augustana scored the final five point of the game for the win.
Carroll led NMU with a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds. Deacon was the only other ‘Cat with 10 or more points as she added 11 and three assists. Whitney Hofer, from Augustana, led all scorers with 22 points. For the game NMU was 24-67 from the floor (35.8 percent). From three-point land the ‘Cats were 3-20 (15 percent), for the second half NMU was 0-7. NMU was 6-10 from the free throw line (60 percent). The ‘Cats did have the advantage off the glass at 44-38.
NMU will face Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday (Nov. 17) at the tournament.
