EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team opened up the 2007-08 season by playing the first game of the 2007 O’Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic at the East Lansing Regional. NMU held a lead as large as nine points in the first half, but could not hold onto the lead and dropped the 60-53 decision to Louisiana-Monroe. The games at the CBE Classic do not count in NMU’s record since they are being played before Nov. 15.
The Wildcats held a three-point lead after the first 20 minutes of play (23-20). NMU was 8-24 from the field in the first half (33.3 percent) which included 4-15 from the three-point line (26.7 percent). The ‘Cats were perfect from the charity stripe in the half by making all three of the throws.
ULM shot 46.2 percent in the second half (12-26) to pull away. But the ‘Cats hung in there by making 11-28 from the floor (39.3 percent). NMU only made two three-pointers in the half in 14 attempts (14.3 percent). The ‘Cats made seven trips to the free throw line in the second 20 minutes of play and made six (85.7 percent).
For the game the ‘Cats were 19-52 from the floor for 36.5 percent. From the arc, NMU was 6-29 for 20.7 percent. NMU only made 10 trips to the free throw line for the game and made nine of the throws (90 percent). ULM was 19-22 from the free throw line (86.4 percent). ULM shot a little bit better than the ‘Cats from the floor at 37.7 percent (20-53) and was 1-15 from three-point land (6.7 percent). NMU had a slight disadvantage on the boards at 38-29.
Two ‘Cats ended the game in double-figures in the scoring column. Jerard Ajami had a game-high 27 points while teammate Tyler Kazmierkoski added 10. Sebastien Salois and Kazmierkoski both pulled down six rebounds.
NMU will play the loser of the Michigan State-Chicago State game tomorrow, Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 4 p.m.
