MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at Northern Michigan University announces the Athletes of the Month for October. Buddy Rivera from the football team was selected as the Male Athlete of the Month. Caryn VanBeckum from the volleyball squad was selected as the Female Athlete of the Month.
Rivera, a senior from Grandville, Mich. set new NMU career records for total offense and touchdown passes against Michigan Tech on Oct. 20. He leaves NMU with 7,781 yards of total offense and 53 touchdown passes.
For the month he had 808 yards of total offense. Rivera had 720 yards passing on 45-9-1 with seven touchdowns. On the ground Rivera scampered for 88 yards on 33 carries and a score. The Wildcats were 3-1 for the month of October.
VanBeckum, a junior from DePere, Wis. was named the GLIAC North Division Player of the Week twice during the month (Oct. 22 and Oct. 29). She was named after the Ferris State-Grand Valley State weekend. She tallied a career-high 26 kills in the upset win over the Lakers. For the same weekend, she was named the AVCA NCAA II National Player of the Week. VanBeckum was also named after hitting at a .432 clip in wins over Saginaw Valley State and Northwood.
For the month she had 173 kills (4.55 k/g), 18 service aces, 27 digs, six block solos, 28 block assists and 34 total blocks.
