MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Northern Michigan University Wildcat Volleyball team defeated the Lake Superior State Lakers in three straight games on Saturday, November 3 in Vandament Arena. The match was the final match of their 2007 regular season. The 'Cats are now 19-11 overall and 13-5 in the GLIAC while the Lakers fall to 8-22 and 3-15, respectively. Amy Andersen-Goldsworthy led the Wildcat attack with 18 kills on 31 attempts for an attack average of .548.
In the first game the 'Cats defeated the Lakers 30-19 with 18 kills on 45 attempts. The Lakers had nine kills on 39 attempts. In game two the Lakers held the lead early but the 'Cats came back and won 30-23. In the third, and final, game of the match the Wildcats had 18 kills on 49 attempts in comparison to nine kills on 36 attempts. The 'Cats won the game 30-15.
Andersen-Goldsworthy led all players with 18 kills while teammates Caryn VanBeckum and Breanne Zaremba added 14 and nine respectively. Ali Jones and Sara Hess led the Laker attack with seven kills each. Wildcat Cassie Osiecki led all defenders with 21 digs while Breanne Zaremba added 14. Brittany McGowan had 45 assists and four service aces on the day.
The Wildcats finished the season in second place in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division. The 'Cats will host the Ferris State Bulldogs on Wednesday, November 7 at 7 p.m. in the quarter-finals of the GLIAC Tournament. The GLIAC tournament format includes eight teams playing at four campus sites, with the two top teams in the North and South Divisions hosting the third and fourth place teams. The remaining teams will then play in the semi-finals and finals on the campus of the highest remaining seed on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 10-11.
