Wildcat Volleyballers Go Five At Tech
HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s volleyball squad saw its four-match winning streak come to an end on Wednesday night in the first match of its U.P. matches for the final week of the regular season. Michigan Tech was the first team up for the Wildcats as they won the match in five games (30-17, 27-30, 25-30, 30-23, 11-15) to split the season series. With the loss the ‘Cats drop to 18-11 overall and 12-5 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). The huskies improve to 8-16 and 6-11 respectively.
This week’s GLIAC North Division Player of the Week, Caryn VanBeckum, led four ‘Cats with 10 or more kills on the night. VanBeckum had a team-high 21 kills in 43 total attempts for a hitting percentage of .256 percent. Katt Garvick had 15 kills, Breanne Zaremba added 11 and Amy Andersen-Goldsworthy had 10. As a team, NMU had 67 kills in 183 total attempts for a hitting percentage of .202 percent.
Brittany McGowan had 57 of the 64 assists for the match. She added two service aces, 12 digs and two block assists. Cassie Osiecki had three service aces and 21 digs for the match. Zaremba added 14 digs in the win.
At the net the ‘Cats had one block solo (Katie Twardzik) and eight block assists. VanBeckum and Andersen-Goldsworthy each had two block assists.
On Saturday (Nov. 3) before the match with Lake Superior State there will be a Coaches Clinic in the Wildcat Room from 3-3:30 p.m. Topics will include the top 10 key volleyball terms, basic hand signals by volleyball officials, game strategy, tips for the knowledgeable fan and there will be time for a question and answer session.
Saturday’s match against the Lakers is also Senior Day. Brittany McGowan and Megan Elliott will be playing their final regular season match in Vandament Arena.
