MARQUETTE, Mich. – The United States Olympic Education Center (USOEC) hosted athletes from China in an exhibition of three Olympic sports Tuesday (Oct. 23).  Athletes competed in boxing, women’s freestyle wrestling and men’s Greco-Roman wrestling.   The USOEC weightlifting team put on a demonstration at the event. This was the first time China sent three teams to the United States to compete in the same facility at the same time.

The USOEC boxers were competing for the final time in Marquette as the program will be closing in December.  “It was a good competition tonight,” said Al Mitchell USOEC Head Coach.  The USOEC took one of the four matches from the Chinese.

Jesse Carradine captured the 125-pound bout, 32-28, over Qiang Liu.   “I put the pressure on in the later rounds-instead of just boxing.  I got in some good right hands,” said Carradine.  In the three other bouts the decision was decided by a point. In the first match of the night Young Dang defeated Bruno Escalante in the 112 bout, 19-18.  Zhang Jianting defeated Omar Henry at 141 (21-20).  At 165 Xia Wenjie took care of USOEC boxer Isaiah Williams-Windley by a count of 37-36.

The Greco-Roman competition saw the Chinese wrestlers take five of the eight matches from the USOEC.  Song Jidong at 264.5 pounds defeated Mike Rossetti, 3-0.  The Chinese won the second match of the night at 211.5 when Chen Xiaofei took care of Peter Gounaridis, 3-0. “I was happy that I did a pretty good job.  The team performance overall was very good,” said Chen.  “These types of competition are great preparation for the 2008 Olympic Games.  Our opponents were very strong so by training and competing against them it was a good learning experience.”  USOEC wrestlers Jake Plamann and Jake Curby took the next two matches.  Plamann won a decision at 185.0 over Liu Ming, 3-1.   At 145.5, Curby won the match by a score of 3-1.

Three of the next four weight classes went to the Chinese.  Wang Chao defeated Peter Kowalczuk, 4-0, at 185.  Shen Zhixue and Wang Hui picked up wins for the Chinese in the next two matches.  Shen at 211.5 won his match, 3-1, over Chas Betts.  At 145.5 Wang won over Kerry Regner, 3-1.  The final match of the night saw Jim Gruenwald win a 3-1 decision over Wang.

The Chinese women took all six freestyle wrestling matches against the USOEC.  Liang Yue won the first match of the night at 158.5 pounds over Katie Crouch, 5-0.  Schuyler Brown lost to Ge Zhen at 138.5 by a count of 3-0.  The next match was at 130.5 as Wang Lie defeated Shyla Iokia, 3-1.

In the final three matches of the competition, Liang Yue won, 4-0, over Lindsey Brooks.  Ge won, 3-0, against Iokia at 130.0.    The final match of the freestyle event saw Wang down Amy Borgnini, 3-1, at 121.0.

The weightlifting demonstration saw Colin Ito take both events on the men’s side while Chelsea Kyle made it a clean sweep on the women’s side.  Ito won the snatch with a lift of 335.1 pounds and the clean and jerk with a lift of 407.9 pounds.  Kyle with a lift of 141.1 pounds captured the snatch and then lifted 198.4 pounds to win the clean and jerk.
