Swimmers And Divers Conclude First Weekend

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The Northern Michigan University swimming and diving team opened up the 2007-08 schedule over the weekend at St. Cloud State University. Competing in the meet were St. Cloud, NMU and MSU-Moorhead. On Friday the Wildcats were defeated by MSU-Moorhead 151.50-89.50 and St. Cloud 165-68. Saturday the second day of competition as the ‘Cats lost to MSUM 142-98 and SCSU 166-68.
 
Friday saw the 400-yard medley relay of Sarah Dobratz, Megan Gerou, Courtney Lowry and Kate Willems place fifth in the opening event (4:29.95). Sarah Cempel took second in the next event which was the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 19:23.85 with teammate Lindsey Kuehn sixth (20:18.12). 
 
Emily Olson was sixth in the 200 freestyle (2:06.31) and Nicole Kaszuba ninth (2:11.55). Willems was the highest placing ‘Cat in the 50 freestyle in ninth (27.39).
 
The 400 I.M. saw NMU finish second and third with Mimi Marschall (4:51.60) and Sarah Van Oss (4:55.28). Kelli Vander Baan placed seventh on the 1-meter board with a score of 189.90. Marschall swam a 57.04 in the 100 freestyle which was good for fourth place as teammate Olson was sixth (58.96).
 
Dobratz (2:19.68) and Kathleen Sweeney (2:28.13) went fourth and fifth respectively in the 200 backstroke. Cempel came back later in the meet to take second in the 500 freestyle (5:38.78) with Kuehn sixth (5:58.71). The 3-meter diving event saw the ‘Cats place third and fourth. Kelli Vander Baan was third (196.10) while Kara Vander Baan was fourth (192.50).
 
Van Oss placed third in the 200 breaststroke with a clocking of 2:39.59 as Gerou was six seconds back in fifth place (2:45.73). The final event of the first day was the 400 freestyle relay. NMU placed third with the A relay as Van Oss, Olson, Brenda Zickus and Marschall swam a 3:54.31.
 
Cempel began the second day with a third-place showing in the 1,000 freestyle (11:48.03). Kuehn also placed in the 1,000 as she was sixth (12:09.60). Olson (2:07.21) and Dobratz (2:08.26) were fifth and seventh respectively in the 200 freestyle. Zickus was eighth in the 50 freestyle (27.34).
 
The 200 I.M. saw Marschall (2:17.73) and Van Oss (2:18.00) go second and third. On the 1-meter board Kelli Vander Baan (192.55) and Kara Vander Baan (187.80) were seventh and eighth respectively.
 
Van Oss swam a 1:03.79 in the 100 butterfly which was good for fourth place. NMU had two swimmers place in the top seven in the 100 freestyle with Olson (58.25) fourth and Zickus seventh (59.32). Kaszuba (1:08.71) was third in the 100 backstroke as was followed by teammate Sweeney (1:08.98) in fourth. The 500 freestyle had three NMU swimmers in the top seven as Dobratz (5:38.41) was second, Cempel (5:47.12) third and Kuehn (5:58.14) seventh.
 
Kelli Vander Baan (210.35) was third on the 3-meter board and was followed by Kara Vander Baan (204.75) in fourth. The 100 breaststroke saw Marschall swim a 1:13.32 which was good for fifth place as she was followed by Gerou (1:17.68) in sixth and Lowry (1:18.62) in seventh.   
 
Van Oss, Olson, Willems and Marschall were members of the 200 freestyle relay which placed second with a time of 1:46.50.
 
The ‘Cats will be in action again on Nov. 17 against Hillsdale at the PEIF Pool.
