Wildcats Drop Home And CCHA Opener

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University hockey team opened up Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) and the home portion of the schedule on Friday night at the Berry Events Center against the University of Michigan. The Wildcats gave the Wolverines nine power-play opportunities and they converted two into goals en route to the 3-1 win. NMU falls to 1-2-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the CCHA while UM improves to 2-1-0 and 1-0-0 respectively.
 
NMU struck first when Nick Sirota scored his second goal of the season at 16:03 of the first period. Matt Butcher and Gregor Hanson assisted. For Hanson it was his first collegiate point. Kevin Porter gave UM the win when he scored two power-play goals. His first marker was at 18:32 of the second period (1-1). Porter scored the game-winner at 10:30 of the third period (2-1). The Wolverines added another goal at 16:16 of the third period by Carl Hagelin for the final count (3-1).
 
NMU could only manage 14 shots on the night while UM had 30. The ‘Cats were shutout in five opportunities on the power play. Brian Stewart went the distance for NMU as he ended the night with 27 saves. Billy Sauer had 13 saves in the win.
 
The two teams will square off again on Saturday night  (Oct. 20) at the Berry Events Center at 7:35 p.m.
