Nick Sirota Picks Up Where He Left Off
HOUGHTON, Mich. – Nick Sirota entered the 2007-08 season as the leading returning scorer and he wasted no time in making his claim. He scored a goal and had an assist in the Wildcats (1-0) 3-2 opening game win of the season over the Michigan Tech Huskies (0-1). The game was the first match-up for the Superior Showcase.
Sirota scored the opening goal of the game for his first of the season at 7:55 of the first period. Andrew Sarauer and Andrew Fernandez assisted on the marker. For Fernandez it was his first collegiate point. MTU would tie the game at one with a power-play goal by Tyler Shelast at 11:59 of the frame. The ‘Cats would take the lead back less than two minutes later when freshman Jared Brown scored his first goal, a short-handed goal, in a NMU uniform at 13:24. His goal was unassisted.
MTU would tie the game once again with a power-play goal by Shelast for his second of the night at 8:28 of the second period. TJ Miller scored the game-winner at 3:43 of the third period on the power play. Sirota and Matt Butcher assisted.
Brian Stewart went the distance between the pipes for the ‘Cats and turned away 20 shots. Michael-Lee Teslak for MTU had 16 saves. The home team had the advantage on the shots at 22-19. NMU was 1-6 on the power play while the Huskies were 2-8.
NMU will play the second game of the Superior Showcase at UM-Duluth tomorrow night (Oct. 13).
