MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University hockey team had a tune-up for the 2007-08 season on Sunday afternoon at the Berry Events Center. NMU defeated The University of Toronto in an exhibition game by a score of 8-0. NMU scored four times in the first period, three in the second and once in the third.
Tim Hartung scored the opening goal of the game from Jared Brown and Erik Gustafsson five minutes into the contest. Mark Olver, the younger brother of former Wildcat Darin Olver, scored the next goal at 13:06 on the power play for the 2-0 lead. Hartung and Blake Cosgrove assisted. Brown scored the third goal at 13:12. Assisting on the goal were Olver and Derek May. The final goal of the first period (4-0) came from Olver for his second of the game at 15:58. Brown and Erik Spady assisted.
Andrew Sarauer made the score 5-0 with a goal at 2:47 of the second period. Cosgrove and Hartung assisted. Sarauer followed that up with a power-play goal at 13:50 to make the count 6-0. Olver and TJ Miller assisted. Billy Smith added a power-play goal of his own at 16:47 for the third goal of the period (7-0). Sarauer and Cosgrove assisted.
May scored the lone goal in the final frame at 15:01, for the final count. Matt Butcher and Spady assisted.
NMU was 3-15 with the extra skater while Toronto was 0-8. The ‘Cats had 36 shots for the game. Brian Stewart and Derek Janzen both saw time between the pipes. Stewart turned away six shots while Janzen had 10 saves.
NMU will take to the road for the first weekend of the regular season for the Superior Showcase. Friday night (Oct. 12) the team will be at Michigan Tech and the next night (Oct. 13) at UM-Duluth.
