SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s volleyball team took a break from Marquette and went to the Soo on Tuesday night to face the Lake Superior State University Lakers. The Lakers took the first game (31-29) before the Wildcats rallied to take the next three (30-20, 30-23, 30-19). The win was the ‘Cats fifth in a row as they now stand at 11-7 overall and 5-1 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). LSSU falls to 5-11 and 1-4 respectively.
A total of four ‘Cats registered 10 or more kills for the match. Mandie Meyer led the way with 16 kills. Amy Andersen-Goldsworthy added 13 kills while Brittany McGowan had 11 and Caryn VanBeckum 10. McGowan, a setter, had a hitting percentage of .407 percent on 27 total attempts as she added 43 assists, nine digs and three block assists.
VanBeckum added six service aces for the match as a team NMU had 11. Cassie Osiecki led the defensive effort with 23 digs. Breanne Zaremba and Meyer each had 14 digs.
NMU will host Saginaw Valley State and Northwood this weekend. The Cardinals will visit the Vandament on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 4 p.m. while the Timberwolves come in the next day at 1 p.m. (Sunday, Sept. 29).
