PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Northern Michigan University women’s volleyball team went over the .500 level for the season when the Wildcats picked up two wins Saturday at the Argonaut Regional Crossover Tournament. NMU also has won its past six matches in a row. The ‘Cats defeated Rollins College in its opening match of the day in four games (30-28, 26-30, 30-26, 30-23) and Alabama-Huntsville later in the day in three straight (30-17, 30-22, 30-23). NMU is now 6-5 on the season.
Against Rollins three ‘Cats had 10 or more kills. As a team, NMU had 57 kills in 212 total attempts for a hitting percentage of .137. Breanne Zaremba led the team with 14 kills. Katt Garvick and Caryn VanBeckum each had 13 kills. Zaremba had a hitting percentage of .222 for the match while VanBeckum had .278 percent. Brittney McGowan had 43 of the 52 assists for the match. Five ‘Cats had 10 or more digs for the match. Zaremba had a team-high 23 digs. McGowan added 18 digs with teammate Cassie Osiecki had 17. Amy Andersen-Goldsworthy had seven block assists to lead the ‘cats at the net. Katie Twardzik had a block sol and five block assists.
In the second match of the day against UAH the ‘Cats were led by Garvick with her 13 kills. VanBeckum was the only other ‘Cat with double-digit kills as she had 10. NMU had a hitting percentage of .236 for the match on 42 kills in 106 total attempts. McGowan had a match-high 37 assists to go along with her 11 digs. Osiecki added 12 digs in the win. VanBekum at the net had one block solo and four block assists.
NMU will play its final match at the tournament tomorrow (Sept. 9) against St. Leo.
