MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Northern Michigan University women’s soccer team opened up the home portion of the schedule on Monday afternoon on the NMU Soccer Field. NMU used two goals from Renee LeBlanc for the 4-0 win over the visiting Lewis University Flyers. LeBlanc set a new NMU career record with her goals. She now has 39 career goals. Carolyn Kunas held the previous career mark with 38 goals. The ‘Cats improve to 3-0 on the season while Lewis falls to 2-1.
Brittney Buchanan gave the ‘Cats the 1-0 lead with her first goal of the season at 4:25 of the contest. LeBlanc scored her first goal of the game at 23:06 to give the ‘Cats the 2-0 lead. The second half saw NMU add two more markers. Joanna Kiilunen made the count 3-0 with her first goal of the season (57:45). LeBlanc then set the record with her second goal of the afternoon at 69:24 for the final count. Amanda Gadomski was given the assist on the record-breaker.
Kara Music and Dana Bush combined for the shutout. Both goalkeepers ended the day with three saves. NMU has yet to give up a goal after three games.
For the game, NMU had 12 shots as seven were on goal. The Flyers had eight shots for the 90 minutes as six were on target. Corner kicks were in favor of the ‘Cats with five as the visitors had two.
Later in the week the team travels to Ohio to open up Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play. Friday (Sept. 7) the ‘Cats are at Ashland before playing at Findlay on Sunday (Sept. 9).
