MARQUETTE—The United States Olympic Education Center selected Greco-Roman wrestler Harry Lester of Akron, Ohio, as the Sawyer International Airport’s elite performer for the month of July. It is the second consecutive month Lester earned the honor.
Lester was chosen for his standout performance at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Northern Michigan University post-baccalaureate student pinned Anyelo Mota of the Dominican Republic in the first period of the 66-kilogram championship match.
“My biggest problem at this tournament was making weight,” said Lester. “When it came to wrestling, I was confident.”
During the tournament, Lester also defeated Renato Migliaccio of Brazil 6-0, 6-0; Ulises Barragan of Mexico by pin at 1:13; and Alain Milian of Cuba 3-1, 3-0.
“European wrestlers and South American wrestlers have very different technique,” he said. “It was an interesting experience—something to get used to, but still a good tournament.”
Lester was also named the USOEC’s athlete of the year for 2006-07. He was a bronze medalist at the 2006 World Championships in China and will represent the United States at the 2007 World Championships this fall in Azerbaijan.
