MARQUETTE – The United States Olympic Education Center selected its Sawyer International Airport elite performance award recipients for June 2007. Greco-Roman wrestler Harry Lester of Akron, Ohio, and female freestyle wrestler Alyssa Lampe of Tomahawk, Wis., were selected as the honorees.
Lester, a Northern Michigan University post-baccalaureate student, was chosen for his performance at this year’s U.S. World Team Trials in Las Vegas.
He finished first in the 66-kilogram weight class for the third consecutive year. The competition served as a qualifier for the 2007 World Championships this September in Baku, Azerbaijan.
“If feels good to know that someone is acknowledging my performance,” said Lester. “It is nice to have such great support from the community and local businesses.”
Lester was also chosen as the USOEC athlete of the year for 2006-07.
Lampe was selected for her standout performance at the Canada Cup in Guelph, Ontario. The NMU freshman finished the tournament with a 4-0 record, including three wins by pinning her opponent. She earned first place at 48 kg.
Lampe was also a member of the winter 2007 semester’s All-Academic Team and was chosen as the freestyle team’s athlete of the semester for winter 2007.
