MARQUETTE – The United States Olympic Education Center named 31 athletes to the All-Academic Team for their performance in the classroom during the winter 2007 semester.
“This shows that all of our teams stress academics as well the sport,” said assistant boxing coach Larry Nicholson. “The staff does a lot to make sure athletes are caught up in class and instructors help make sure athletes are able to compete.”
Athletes chosen from the boxing team include Northern Michigan University freshmen Jesse Carradine (Cincinnati, Ohio), Bruno Escalante (Waimanalo, Hawaii), Keola McKee (Wailuku, Hawaii) and Isaiah Williams-Windley (Akron, Ohio); junior DeRae Crane (Rock Island, Ill.); and graduating seniors Walter Sarnoi (Monterey Park, Calif.) and Jose Villarreal (Rockford, Ill.). Sarnoi graduated with a bachelor’s degree in finance and Villarreal earned a bachelor’s degree in clinical lab science.
Eight women freestyle wrestlers also made the team. They include NMU freshman Alyssa Lampe (Tomahawk, Wis.); sophomore Nicole Darrow (Lanesboro, Mass.); juniors Dany Hedin (Kailua, Hawaii) and Sadie Kaneda (Honolulu, Hawaii); and senior Amy Borgnini (Terre Haute, Ind.). May graduates Liz Short (Lombard, Ill.), Kierstin Hyatt (Carmichael, Calif.) and Jenna Pavlik (Lewes, Del.) also earned the honor. Short received a bachelor’s degree in athletic training. Hyatt and Pavlik earned master’s degrees in public administration and education, respectively.
They are joined on the team by five Greco-Roman wrestlers: juniors Chas Betts (St. Michael, Minn.), Andy Bisek (Chaska, Minn.) and Kevin Lozano (Jefferson, La.); and senior Jacob Curby (LaGrange, Ill.). Marco Lara (Long Beach, Calif.) made the team as well. He received a bachelor’s degree in entrepreneurship.
Speedskaters earning the honor included NMU freshmen Kyle Carr (Atlanta, Ga.) and Katherine Reutter (Champaign, Ill); sophomores Levi Kirkpatrick (Hills, Iowa) and Sonia Milan (North Royalton, Ohio); and junior Cherise Wilkins (Syracuse, N.Y.).
Members of the weightlifting team filled the remaining positions on the All-Academic Team. They included NMU freshman Steve Jarvis (Niagra, Wis.); sophomore Collin Ito (Vista, Calif.); junior Justin Brimhall (Miami, Fl.); senior Ashley Suggs (Whitesboro, Texas); and post-baccalaureate student Vance Newgard (Homewood, Ill.). Rachel Hearn (Savannah, Ga.), who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in marketing, also made the team.
