Athlete of the Year and Gildo Canale Senior Awards Announced
MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University Athletic Department announces the winners of the Athlete of the Year and the Gildo Canale Senior Awards.
The Athlete of the Year is awarded to a male and female student-athlete based on athletic performance for the 2006-07 academic year. To be awarded the Gildo Canale Senior Award a student-athlete must be a senior, have competed in intercollegiate athletics for four years at NMU, have a superior academic record and exhibit high character. The award was established in 1982 by former NMU Athletic Director Gildo Canale. An award is given to a male and female student-athlete.
Ricky Volcy, Lindsay Williams and Lindsey Weier were named the Athletes of the Year. Matt Maunu and Stephanie Mishica were selected as the winners of the Gildo Canale Senior Award.
Volcy was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Men’s Basketball Player of the Year for the past season. He was also named to several All-American teams. Volcy was second in the GLIAC in scoring (22.5 ppg) and led the conference in rebounding (9.6 rpg). He led the 2006-07 Wildcats in points (653), steals (53), blocks (80), rebounds (279), field goals attempted (471), field goals made (222), free throws attempted (196) and free throws made (142).
Williams and Weier led the ‘Cats one-two-three sweep at the NCAA Skiing Championships. Along with Morgan Smyth the ‘Cats were the first women’s team to sweep both events at the same championship. Williams won the 5K freestyle race while teammate Weier was third. In the 15K classic race, Weier won the event just edging out Williams. Both skiers have represented the USA in international competitions.
Maunu was selected as NMU’s Scholar-Athlete to the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) All-Scholar-Athlete Team. He appeared in 41 games for the ‘Cats and registered 16 points on five goals and 11 assists. His numbers for the past season were all career highs.
Mishica was a member of the cross country and track teams. She was an All-GLIAC Academic selection for cross country and indoor track. Injured for most of the outdoor track season, she recently finished in seventh-place in the heptathlon at the Gina Relays which was held at Hillsdale College.
