MARQUETTE, Mich. – Troy Mattson the head women’s basketball coach at Northern Michigan University announces three student-athletes have all signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball for the Wildcats beginning in the fall. Signing on the dotted line were Hillary Bowling, Kellie Rietveld and Steffani Stoeger.
“This is an exciting start to our recruiting class of 2007-08,” Mattson said. “All three players are very athletic and have a great understanding of how to play on both ends of the court.”
Bowling (5-10) a wing from Greenwood, Ind. and Center Grove High School averaged 12 points a game for the 2006-07 season. She also averaged six rebounds, three assists and two steals a contest for the season. Bowling was named the Johnson County Player of the Year for the past season. She was also a first-team all-county, all-conference and Suburban South selection. Bowling was named to the Hoosier Basketball Magazine Top 40 Team and will participate in the Indiana North-South All-Star Game. Her team went 19-7 for the 2006-07 season and captured sectional and regional championships.
Rietveld (5-7) a combo guard from New Lenox, Ill. and Lincoln-Way Central High School was a three-year varsity starter. For her senior campaign she averaged 16 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals a game. Rietveld was a two-time All-Southwest Suburban Red Division selection. She was selected her team’s MVP for the past season. Rietveld was selected as the Star Newspaper Player of the Year. She was a first-team pick for the Herald News, Southtown and the Star Newspaper all-area teams. Lincoln-Way Central went 23-6 for the 2006-07 season and picked up conference and regional titles. Off the court, Rietveld placed fourth in the 17-year-old division at the Chicago Marathon.
Stoeger (5-7) a point guard from Appleton, Wis. and Fox Valley Lutheran High School was a three-time first-team all-conference selection. Stoeger was a unanimous selection after her senior season. She was the Valley Eight Player of the Year for the 2006-07 season. After her junior and senior seasons, Stoeger was named to the Post Crescent All-Area Team as a first-team pick. Stoeger was selected as the Post Crescent Player of the Year for the past season. She was an AP and Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) honorable mention all-state selection as a senior. Stoeger holds the Fox Valley Lutheran school record for points averaged per game which she set during her junior campaign (18.4 ppg).
