MARQUETTE, Mich. – Three members of the Northern Michigan University women’s cross country ski team are keeping busy competing in Europe. Morgan Smyth, Lindsey Weier and Lindsay Williams have skated in several races on the continent.
Smyth and Williams competed at the 2007 Under-23 Cross Country World Championships which were held in Tarvisio, Itlay. In the classic technique sprint, Smyth was eighth and Williams 13th in the field of 43. Williams led the NMU contingent in the 10K freestyle race with a 34th place showing with a time of 26:16.9 while Smyth was 36th (26:32.9). Williams was 35th in the 15K pursuit with a clocking of 45:21.2 while Smyth was the next skier to cross the finish line (45:23.0).
At the World Nordic Junior Championships which were held in Stryn, Norway, Weier and Williams competed in the event. Williams was the top U.S. skier in the 5K freestyle race with a 14th place showing (13:42.6). Weier placed 45th in the event with a time of 14:17.0.
Currently on display in the cross country skiing trophy case in the PEIF are the awards won by the skiers at the recently concluded NCAA Skiing Championships. The case is located across the hall from the women’s basketball office.
