MARQUETTE—United States Olympic Education weightlifters won eight medals at the Junior National Championships March 9-11 in Merrillville, Ind.
Northern Michigan University sophomore Alex Argueta (Aurora, Ill.) earned two silver medals at 63 kilograms. She snatched 67kg and clean-and-jerked 88kg, lifting a total of 155kg at the competition.
NMU sophomore Collin Ito (Vista, Calif.), who competes at 105-plus kg, captured one gold and two silvers. Ito lifted 145 kg in the snatch and 185 kg in the clean-and-jerk for a total of 330kg.
NMU freshman Steve Jarvis (Niagra, Wis.) took home two gold medals and a silver at 94kg. Jarvis snatched 133kg and clean-and-jerked 162kg. He lifted a combined total of 295kg.
“I am extremely satisfied with the performances of these three athletes at the national meet, especially Ito and Jarvis. Both of the boys have improved a lot since they got to NMU and still have potential,” said head coach Ma Jianping.
USOEC weightlifters will compete April 14-15 at the University National Championships in Reno, Nev., to wrap up their 2006-2007 season.
