Wildcats Win Combined Title

ISHPEMING, Mich. – Martin Stuge Banerud took the freestyle event yesterday at the NCAA Central Regional Championship for cross country skiing and was the top placing Wildcat for the 15K classic on Sunday.
 
Banerud placed third in classic event with a time of 44:25.1. He finished behind two skiers from Alaska. NMU had three other skiers in the top 10. Phil Violett (44:41.2) was fifth as he was followed by Bill Bowler (45:18.3) in sixth and Justin Singleton (45:39.8) seventh. Tim Cook just missed a top 10 finish as he was 11th with a time of 46:00.0. Ben Cline (46:32.2) was the final ‘Cat to skate across the finish line in 13th place.
 
NMU took the combined team title (freestyle and classic) with 184 points. Alaska was second in the team race 12 points in back of the ‘Cats with 172 points. Michigan Tech was third with 160 points.
 
The team will have some time off before its next competition which will be at the NCAA Skiing Championships, March 3-10 in Waterville, N.H.
