SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team keeps on streaking as they picked-up its seventh straight win. Thursday night the Wildcats defeated the Lake Superior State Lakers 73-64. The seven-game streak matches a high for the season.
NMU is now 15-9 overall on the season and 9-6 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). LSSU falls to 8-15 and 5-9 respectively.
NMU held the lead for about 59 minutes of the game. After a three-all tie the ‘Cats scored eight points in a row to take an 11-3 lead. Three-pointers were made by Will Washington and Jake Suardini while Sebastien Salois sank a jumper. Washington made a three-pointer with 7:09 left in the half for the ‘Cats biggest lead (25-11). NMU would take a 32-27 lead into the locker room at intermission.
The first six minutes of the second half the ‘Cats held a seven-point advantage after the Lakers tried the cut into the lead. From the 12 minute mark until almost the end of the game the ‘Cats held a double-digit lead over the Lakers. Steve Kaiser gave the ‘Cats its biggest lead of the game at 66-46 with 5:09 left in the game.
Four ‘Cats ended the game in double-digits in the scoring column. Ricky Volcy led the way with his 12th double-double of the season. He ended the night with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Washington added 15 while Chris Warner and Suardini had 13 and 11 points respectively. Mark Morse led the Lakers with 17 points. Warner also had seven assists and two steals.
Both tams shot in the 40 percent range for the game. NMU was 23-53 for 43.4 percent. From the three-point line the ‘Cats were 11-34 for 32.4 percent. Washington was 5-8 from the arc. NMU was 16-27 from the free throw line (59.3 percent). The ‘Cats won the battle off the glass (37-32).
NMU will face the Bulldogs of Ferris State University on Saturday (Feb. 10) in Big Rapids, Mich. FSU defeated NMU about a month ago in Marquette.
