SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Cappo Cup will change its address thanks to a 2-1 win by the Lake Superior Lakers on Saturday night over the Northern Michigan Wildcats at Taffy Abel Arena. The Wildcats have held the cup since the 2000-01 season.
The ‘Cats and Lakers split the weekend series as NMU won last night in Marquette. LSSU took the four-game season series with a 3-1-0 slate. The ‘Cats now stand at 12-18-2 overall on the season and 9-14-1 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). LSSU improves to 15-12-3 and 9-10-3 respectively.
The Lakers took the 1-0 lead when Derek A. Smith scored his sixth goal of the season on the power play at 2:22 of the first period. Andrew Sarauer on an extra-attacker goal at 10:35 of the second period tied the score with his third goal of the season. Nick Sirota and Zach Tarkir assisted on the goal.
Nathan Perkovich scored the game-winning goal at 2:49 of the third period. The goal was his 11th of the season.
Bill Zaniboni after recording a shutout last night had 26 saves tonight. Jeff Jakaitis turned away 23 shots. NMU was 0-5 with the extra attacker as the Lakers were 1-8. LSSU had a four-shot advantage over the ‘Cats at 28-24.
NMU will take its final road trip of the regular season next weekend (Feb.9-10). The team will stay within its cluster and skate against the Ohio State Buckeyes in Columbus, Ohio.
