MARQUETTE, Mich.– The Mercyhurst Lakers came out strong against the Northern Michigan University Wildcats but the ‘Cats were able to pull away in the end to come up with a 82-69 victory over the Lakers. The ‘Cats have won five games in a row and are 13-9 overall and 7-6 in the GLIAC. The Lakers are 14-7 and 6-5, respectively. The ‘Cats will host the Gannon Knights on Saturday (Feb. 3) at 3:00 p.m.
The Lakers opened up the scoring and the ‘Cats didn’t take the lead for the first time until Will Washington hit a three-pointer at 17:29 of the first half. After trading baskets for the rest of the half, the ‘Cats took a four-point lead into halftime after Will Washington hit a three pointer and Tyler Kazmierkoski made a free throw. Chris Warner opened up the scoring in the second half as he tipped-in a missed three-pointer by Sebastien Salois. The Lakers came back and took the lead at 14:32 of the second half but the ‘Cats rallied back and reclaimed the lead for the final time at 10:37.
Will Washington led all scorers with 24 points while teammate Ricky Volcy added 15 points and 11 rebounds. Sebastien Salois and Tyler Kazmierkoski had 11 points each. The ‘Cats shot 56% from the field, 50% from three-point range, and 82.4% from the charity stripe on the night. The Lakers shot 48.1%, 33.3%, and 70.6% respectively.
