DULUTH, Minn. – Mike Santorelli extended his goal streak to six games, but that was not enough for the Wildcats. Playing a mid-week game against the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs on the team’s way to Omaha the team fell by a score of 4-2.
NMU is now 11-15-2 while UMD improves to 9-16-3.
Santorelli gave the ‘Cats an early 1-0 with an unassisted goal at 12:19 of the first period. The goal was Santorelli’s 23rd of the season. He currently leads the CCHA in goals and is second in the nation.
The Bulldogs would take a 2-1 thanks to goals by Bryan McGregor at 16:22 of the opening period and Jordan Fulton at 15:41 of the middle frame. Pat Bateman tied the game at two-all with his fifth goal of the season at 18:34 of the second period. Darin Olver and Matt Maunu assisted.
The home team added two goals in the third period to take the game. McGregor scored his second goal of the night at 6:57 to give the Bulldogs the 3-2 lead. Mason Raymond scored an empty-net goal for the final tally at 19:45.
NMU had the advantage on the shots at 32-28. The ‘Cats were 0-2 on the power play while the Bulldogs were 1-3. Brian Stewart getting a start tonight had 24 saves in a losing effort. Josh Johnson from UMD had 30 saves to pick up the win.
NMU will travel down the road to face the University of Nebraska-Omaha on Friday and Saturday (Jan. 26-27).
