MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team was back in conference play on Thursday night at the Berry Events Center. The Wildcats were hosting its other U.P. rival the Lake Superior State University Lakers. NMU shot 37.5 percent from the floor (21-56) and dropped the game by a score of 65-58.
With the loss the ‘Cats are 5-8 overall on the season and 2-3 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). The Lakers improve to 9-3 and 5-0 respectively.
LSSU raced out to an 11-4 lead after four minutes of play. LSSU ended the half by shooting 60 percent from the floor (15-25). Kelsey Deacon hit a three-pointer at 13:29 to tie the game at 13-all. The final 12 minutes of the half the ‘Cats cut the lead to one point twice, but each time the Lakers answered. Cassi Rushford sank both of her free throws at 12:04 to cut the lead to 18-17. LSSU answered with a 6-1 run. Deacon connected on a jumper with 3:23 left and the ‘Cats were down 36-35. The Lakers went on a 7-2 run to end the half (43-37).
The second half was all Lakers as they built a 55-42 lead about seven minutes in the half. Deacon made a lay-up with a little over a minute left in the game to get the ‘Cats within six (64-58). That was as close as the team would get on the night.
After shooting for 48 percent in the first half (12-25) NMU was 9-31 in the second half for 29 percent. Four of NMU’s six three-pointer came from Deacon and Maria Kasza as both had two each. The ‘Cats attempted 18 three-pointers for the game (33.3 percent). NMU was 10-16 from the free throw line (62.5 percent). Cassie Hegbloom and Rushford led the ‘Cats on the boards with nine each. As a team NMU out-rebounded the Lakers 37-33.
Deacon led all players with 16 points. She also added four assists. Rushford chipped in with 11 points while Allison Carroll had 10. Mandi Johnson led the Lakers with 14 points.
The ‘Cats are at Grand Valley State on Saturday (Jan. 6).
