FT. WAYNE, Ind. – The Northern Michigan University hockey team held a 2-1 lead entering the third period against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Saturday. But the Fighting Irish scored three goals in the final 20 minutes of action and defeated the Wildcats 4-3.
The loss, the ‘Cats sixth in a row, drops the team to 7-11-2 overall and 4-8-1 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. ND improves to 15-3-1 and 10-2-1 respectively.
Ray Kaunisto scored his first collegiate goal at 13:22 of the first period to give the ‘Cats the 1-0 lead. Zach Tarkir and Blake Cosgrove assisted on the goal. The lead would not last that long as ND tied the game three minutes later. Nick Sirota gave the ‘Cats the lead again with his sixth goal of the season at 6:07 of the second period (2-1). Darin Olver and Andrew Sarauer assisted.
The Fighting Irish added two third period goals to take a 3-2 lead. Jacques Lamoureux tied the game at three with his first career goal at 6:06 of the final frame. Bobby Selden picked-up the lone assist. Erik Condra scored the game-winning goal for the Fighting Irish at 13:57.
NMU was on the short end of the shot count (35-22). For the game, NMU had two power-play opportunities and could not convert. ND went 1-6 with the extra skater.
Bill Zaniboni turned away 31 shots for NMU. David Brown for the Fighting Irish had 19 saves.
The two teams will square off again tomorrow afternoon at Notre Dame.
