HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team was never challenged at the Michigan Tech-Country Inn & Suites Classic on Friday. NMU began the game against Finlandia University with a 22-2 run and never looked back in defeating the Lions by a score of 76-42.
NMU is now 4-7 on the season while FU falls to 2-9.
The Wildcats used a very short bench against the Lions as every one who played scored. NMU used eight players in the game. Erin Gerard was held out of the game because of illness. NMU held a 39-14 lead after the first 20 minutes of play. The NMU defense held the Lion to 20 percent shooting from the floor for the first half (6-30).
The ‘Cats were about even in the shooting department. NMU for the first half was 15-36 from the floor (41.7 percent) and 14-33 for the second half (42.4 percent). For the game the ‘Cats shot 42.0 percent. NMU was 8-25 from the three-point line (32.0 percent). From the charity stripe the ‘Cats were 10-13 for 76.9 percent. Along the boards the ‘Cats had a huge advantage at 48-35. Cassi Rushford had a career night along the boards as she had 13.
Three players ended the game in double-figures. Kelsey Deacon led all scorers with 16 points. Allison Carroll added 11 while LaShawn Lambert poured in a career-high 15 points. Casey Luke led the Lions with eight points.
The ‘Cats will face Marygrove at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow (Dec. 30) at the MTU event.
