MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team used a 10-5 run to begin its non-conference game against St. Norbert College on Sunday afternoon at the Berry Events Center. NMU never trailed in the game and defeated the Green Knights 73-57.
The ‘Cats improve to 3-5 on the season while SNC falls to 2-4.
A three-pointer by Chris Warner and two lay-ups by Jake Suardini got the ‘Cats rolling about a minute into the game. Warner gave the home team an 11-point lead when he made a lay-up with 6:15 left and the ‘Cats up 26-15. Tyler Kazmierkoski made a lay-up at the buzzer as the ‘Cats ended the first 20 minutes of play leading 40-28.
The second half saw the ‘Cats hold a double-digit lead almost the entire way. SNC did cut the lead to seven points about a minute into the half (40-33). Will Washington sank a three-pointer with 7:44 left in the game for the ‘Cats biggest lead at 66-41.
Ricky Volcy had another double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. He also had five assists and two steals. Washington added 14 points as he led the team with three three-pointers. Eric Gruenewald for the Green Knights led all scorers with 19 points.
The NMU defense held SNC to 27.3 percent shooting from the floor (15-55). NMU for the game shot 44.6 percent from the floor (29-65). The ‘Cats were 8-24 from three-point range (33.3 percent) and 7-10 from the free throw line (70 percent). NMU had nine more rebounds than SNC (44-35).
The ‘Cats will continue with its home stand as they face UW-Stout on Wednesday, Dec. 13 at 7:30 p.m.
