SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University hockey team saw its seven-game winning streak against the Lake Superior State Lakers end on Friday night. The Lakers used two first period goals to take the first game of the home-and-home affair by a score of 2-0. The two teams will drop the puck in Marquette on Saturday night (Dec. 2) at 7:35 p.m.
NMU falls to 7-7-2 overall on the season and 4-4-1 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). LSSU improves to 9-5-1 and 4-4-1 respectively.
The Lakers outshot the Wildcats 14-5 in the first period. LSSU scored the opening goal of the game at 1:33 when Dominic Osman scored his third goal of the season. Steven Kaunisto then added a goal at 6:56 for his first of the season.
NMU outshot the Lakers by a count of 12-4 in the second period and 14-5 in the third. NMU ended the game with a 31-23 shot advantage. Bill Zaniboni was in goal for the ‘Cats as he tallied 21 saves. Jeff Jakaitis for the Lakers recorded the shutout with 31 saves. NMU was 0-5 on the power play while LSSU was 0-9.
