"My professors and the NMU community have been amazing these past few years. Without the passion that NMU professors have for helping their students succeed and the support they have provided, I would never have gotten to where I am now. The phrase 'it takes a village' comes to mind, and having a supportive community and people to nudge, push, and support you is the difference between success and failure. Four years ago I was terrified to go back to college as an almost-40-year-old. I was afraid of failure, of not fitting in, or just giving up. But because of the people I surrounded myself with- friends, professors, and community members- I accomplished more than I ever thought possible."

Savannah Koontz

Anthropology

Savannah Koontz is a Forensic Anthropology Major at NMU. Savannah recently traveled to the American Association of Biological Anthropologists (AABA) 92nd Annual Meeting in Reno, Nevada with Assistant Professor Malorie Albee, Ph.D. She presented a poster on "Colorblindness and inaccessibility of textbook images in Anthropology," as part of the AABA Committee on Diversity (COD) Undergraduate Research Symposium. Dr. Albee had this say about the experience, "It was very successful and she generated a lot of interest in making Anthropology more accessible!"

Anthropology Club

Anthropology club meets in the Archaeology Lab (Jamrich 2313) on Wednesdays at 6:30, though this does change semester-to-semester. The club can be found at Fallfest, Winterfest, and Summerfest. When in the community, the club promotes archaeology and biological anthropology. In the past they have been a part of archaeology day at the local History Center, Spooky Science Night with the local Children's Museum, and fundraising as part of Marquette's Haunted Hayride, performing a witch-hanging and burning scene which can be seen here!

Various educational activities are apart of the weekly meetings. Some examples are Zoom presentations with professionals, resume-building nights, and course registration help. Outside of academics, there are plenty of weekly meetings that are fun get-togethers. They host game nights, movie nights, craft nights, Just Dance parties, etc. One club tradition is decorating terracotta pots, smashing them, and gluing them back together! We try to get out of campus once a month by visiting museums, hiking, and visiting other universities.

To contact the club, email: anthclub@nmu.edu

More information can also be found on the club's Instagram (@nmu_anthro)
