Annual Events

Cat Packs

The Volunteer Center is paired with the Salvation Army to reduce hunger in the Marquette community. Students at North Star Academy who are on the free and reduced lunch plan receive meals for the weekend from Cat Packs. NMU students can sign up to help assemble food packs every Thursday at 3 p.m. by emailing nmucatpacks@gmail.com.

Make A Difference Day

Every October, the NMU Volunteer Center recruits student organizations to help elderly and disabled citizens take care of raking and general yardwork before winter sets in. If you are interested in being a part of Make A Difference Day or would like your yard rake, please contact the Volunteer Center at volctr@nmu.edu.

Special Olympics

The Upper Peninsula Winter Special Olympics occurs in January.  Special Olympics athletes come to Marquette Mountain and the Superior Dome every year to partake in a multitude of winter-based activities.  There are many different volunteer opportunities within this event, from cheering on athletes to helping with snowshoe races.  Contact Special Olympics at 906-226-3210 if you are interested in taking part in this volunteer opportunity.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

For Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, (the third Monday of every January), students are invited to attend a day of service honoring Dr. King's legacy.  Every year student volunteers take part in mini-service projects throughout the community which help benefit different individuals and organizations throughout the community.

Gift of Life

Every year Northern joins in the competition against other Michigan colleges to get students to register as organ donors on their driver's license or state-issued ID card.  If you would like to register as an organ donor, look for tables set up in Jamrich or the Library in January and February.  If you would like to help work one of these tables, please contact the Volunteer Center at volctr@nmu.edu for more information.

Be The Match

Northern is helping Be The Match educate and register students on becoming a Bone Marrow Donor. Students can register to become a donor and learn more about the process of donating and can also help run the tables. For information, contact the Volunteer Center at volctr@nmu.edu.
