Greater Proficiency in Mathematics
U.P. Mathematics-Science Partnership (MSP) Grant
for 2011-2013

Greater Proficiency in Mathematics is a professional learning program for elementary and middle grades educators to support a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts.  It is a partnership between the Upper Peninsula five Math Science Centers, Lake Superior State University, Northern Michigan University, Michigan Technological University, Bay de Noc Community College and the Intel Math Program (Vermont Mathematics Initiative and the Mathematics Learning Communities program in Massachusetts.  Professional learning and evaluation will be supported by the University of Michigan and SAMPI at Western Michigan University. The Goals include the development of leadership capacity in math education within the Upper Peninsula of Michigan including content specialists and learning community facilitators to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics; to establish Math Learning Communities within the Math Science Centers which include local  K-8th grade teachers, STEM faculty and University Math educators; to the  foundation for sustainable support of a rigorous concept-based math curriculum aligned with the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics.

The program includes fourteen days of professional development which include a five day summer institute, six school year workshops and three days of analyzing student work the second summer of the program.  Materials and trainers from the Intel Math program will be extensively used through all trainings.
