Graduation Information
NEXT COMMUNICATION:
The next communication you will receive from us will contain information from the NMU record system for you to review for the printing of your diploma and final transcript. This will be mailed to your local address two to three weeks prior to the end of the semester. If you are participating in commencement, the mailing will also include your seat assignment.
INFORMATION RESTRICTIONS:
The Family Rights and Privacy Act (federal law) stipulates that if you have a restriction on your name, address or other information, it can not be released by the University. As you graduate, restricted information can create potential problems for you. For example, if your name is restricted, we can not verify your graduation to prospective employers or notify your home newspaper of your graduation. In addition, you may not participate in commencement, or have your name published in the commencement program. Please come to the Degree Audit Office, Room 2202 C.B. Hedgcock to remove restrictions.
MAILING OF DIPLOMAS:
Diplomas will be mailed approximately eight weeks after the commencement ceremony. There is a two week delay from other graduation periods due to the holidays.

ACCOMMODATIONS REQUEST:
If you have a need for disability related accommodations or services during commencement, please contact the Degree Audit Office at 227-2257 or email degaudit@nmu.edu. Reasonable and effective accommodations and services will be provided to students if requests are made in a timely manner, with appropriate documentation, in accordance with federal, state and university guidelines.
CAP & GOWN:
The deadline for ordering your cap and gown at the NMU Bookstore is October 17, 2008. If your cap & gown are not ordered by that date you will pay an additional $5.00. Cap, gown & honor cords may be picked up at the Bookstore, Textbook Office, Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., during finals week, December 8-13, 2008.
REHEARSAL:
Rehearsal will begin at 2:15 p.m. in the Superior Dome on Friday, December 12, 2008.
CHILDREN:
The university provides free, well supervised, child care for children under 10 years of age during the commencement ceremony. Child care is located in the dance studio (Room 130 in the PEIF building).
PHOTOGRAPHS:
The University has retained the services of a professional photographer from Chappell Studios to take your picture as you shake the President’s hand. Instructions for ordering will be sent to your permanent home address (see information restrictions above) from the photographer with a “proof” print. If you have questions, please contact the company at 1-800-424-3686.
VIDEO:
A DVD of the entire commencement ceremony may be ordered from Northern Michigan University, WNMU-TV, 1401 Presque Isle Avenue, Marquette, MI 49855. Additional information on ordering a recording will be mailed to your local address. If you have questions regarding the DVD, call 906-227-1300.
COMMENCEMENT REPORT TIME:
You must report to the Vandament Arena (Room 160 in the PEIF building), Saturday, December 13, at 9:30 a.m. to line up for the processional. The march to the Superior Dome is at 10:15 a.m. Please inform your guests that the Superior Dome will open at 9:30 a.m. and commencement begins at 10:30 a.m. Guest seating is not limited and is open to the general public. No tickets are necessary.
