Talking Points on Michigan's higher education budget

As you are all aware, the state budget currently proposed has a HUGE negative impact on Marquette County and the Upper Peninsula. But YOU CAN HELP! Citizen's voices are having an impact in Lansing with our legislators. We strongly urge you to take action by contacting U.P. legislators or Michigan's legislative leadership.

Below is a list of talking points that can be used to express the need to find a solution to these budget problems and not just put on a band aid that negatively impacts our community.

Talking points

  • It is unfair to single out NMU for a disproportionate cut compared to other 14 campuses.
  • It is unfair to single out U.P. organizations to shoulder higher budget cuts: NMU, prisons, etc.
  • Do no harm; take a year to put together a rational funding formula that honors the mission and vision of each of Michigan's 15 universities.
  • Restore NMU's budget and allow NMU to continue to grow to lower FYES funding.
  • Honor the economic impact NMU has on the U.P. economy: $287M, 4800 jobs 500% return on the public dollar.
  • Reward NMU for innovation, balanced budgets and continuing to serve the region.
  • Do not support an ill conceived formula that remixes an under funded pot of money.
