Slight revisions are being made to several presidential advisory groups this regarding membership and schedules. These changes will help to better define the role of each group regarding university strategy and campus decision-making, will eliminate some duplication of effort, as well as create more synergy and efficiency of meeting time for group members. The presidential advisory groups with changes are:
Executive Council – will continue to meet weekly, but will move the meeting time from Thursday afternoons to Monday afternoons. Along with the current membership of the president, three vice presidents and the NMU Foundation’s CEO, being added are the Dean of Students and the Assistant to the President for Strategic Initiatives. The primary charges of this group are to address any university operations, issues and situations that need the highest level of administrative decision-making, as well as campus-wide university strategic planning.
Leadership Council – will continue to meet on Mondays. The group consists of the president’s direct reports and several other top administrators, and will now add the five academic deans. The Council’s primary responsibilities are to keep the president informed of issues and situations facing the various areas of the campus the members represent, as well as to identify and share campus, community or discipline area opportunities for Northern. This group will also work as a sounding board for the president and VPs regarding strategy and potential campus decisions worked on by the Executive Council, it will oversee preparation of the NMU Board of Trustees meeting presentations and materials and it will advise on new policy and policy change recommendations. President’s Council – will change its meeting schedule from several times per semester to a minimum of three times per year. The group’s primary responsibility is to give a comprehensive overview of accomplishments, challenges, issues, opportunities and current projects of each member’s area. Members are expected to provide feedback on campus discussions brought to the Council, as well as to share information provided in the meetings with students, faculty and staff of their respective areas. The group also assists with feedback on new policy and policy change recommendations. The membership of the President’s Council consists of the president, vice presidents, NMU Foundation CEO and most of the VP's direct reports who are at the associate/assistant VP, director or executive director level of an NMU department. Strategic Planning and Budgeting Advisory Committee – Meets monthly, typically on the first Wednesday afternoon of each month, during the academic year. The 40-plus members are presidential appointees serving one-, two-, and three-year terms. The primary responsibility of this group is to provide feedback to the president and VPs regarding university strategy, including strategic uses of resources. Meeting materials and minutes are posted on the SPBAC page of the NMU Strategic Plan website. Most meetings feature an area for non-committee campus members who wish to observe the meetings.
President's Committee on Diversity – Meets monthly during the academic year. The 26 members are presidential appointees who serve one- or three-year terms, depending on term type (student, faculty/staff or community). The group’s primary responsibilities are to make recommendations to the president of ways to promote diversity within the framework of the university’s mission and strategic plan, identify diversity-related issues and opportunities on campus and in the community that impact Northern students, faculty and staff, as well as to plan and oversee some diversity/inclusion events. Gender Work Group – Meets monthly during the academic year. The 20 members are presidential appointees who serve one- or three-year terms, depending on term type (student, faculty/staff or community). The group’s primary responsibilities are to make recommendations to the president regarding gender-related issues and opportunities on campus and in the community that impact Northern students, faculty and staff.
