MPA Admission Requirements

Students seeking admission to the Master of Public Administration degree must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year institution. Students must also apply to NMU’s College of Graduate Studies, as well as to the MPA program. Admissions into Northern’s graduate school does not imply admission into the MPA program. Please see the Graduate Studies Web site for more information.  For additional information on the MPA or Certificate program click here.

Departmental admission eligibility:

  1. Satisfy the minimum graduate school entrance requirements
  2. Have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher, or
  3. Have a 3.25 GPA based on 12 credit hours of relevant graduate credit

In-service students with less than a 3.0 GPA may qualify for conditional admission if the departmental admissions committee makes such a recommendation. This recommendation is typically based on relevant work experience or other extenuating circumstances. Pre-service students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA for admission.

Starting January 2008, students applying to the MPA program must submit:

  1. Their scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE);
  2. Three letters of recommendation;
  3. A three-page, typed essay describing career goals and explaining how the MPA program will assist in the advancement of these goals;
  4. Transcripts.
