Public Administration Degrees

NMU's two graduate programs—the Certificate in Public Management (CPM) and the Master's in Public Administration (MPA)—are designed to meet the needs of public-sector professionals in  local, state and federal government, not for profit organizations, health care or higher education.

The 44-credit MPA can be earned on nights and weekends.

 

Learn more about the benefits and distinctions of these two programs. All graduate students taking at least eight credit hours per semester qualify for NMU's leading technology program, which includes use of a ThinkPad notebook computer.

Certificate in Public Management

Master's in Public Administration

  • Complete in just two semesters
  • All courses taken as hybrid online classes and videoconference meetings held on five Saturdays in Escanaba, Houghton, Menominee and Saulte Ste. Marie, Mich. (Subject to sufficient demand each semester.)
  • Meet and network with other management professionals and those wanting to increase their knowledge of the public sector.
  • No undergraduate course prerequisites are required for the graduate certificate classes.
  • No Graduate Record Examination (GRE) required.
  • Many internship opportunities that match your interest and build your experience are available at the local, state, regional, federal and international levels.An internship is not required, though.
  • Once you complete the 16 credits for the certificate you would only need to complete 26 credits (28 if you need to take an internship—which is often waived with appropriate experience) for the Master's in Public Administration. All of the credits taken for the certificate count toward NMU's MPA degree.
  • All classes are in the evening and on weekends.
  • Many of the classes are taught as online, hybrid online and via video conferencing so that you do not have to travel to campus on a weekly or daily basis.
  • The MPA provides individuals an opportunity to receive advanced training in a variety of contemporary administrative practices, topics and issues. 
  • Obtain and hone appropriate skills in management techniques, research methods, policy analysis, personnel procedures and budget practices.
  • Tuition costs less than for the NMU Master's of Business Administration (MBA)..
  • Leadership education that helps you understand the various methods of leadership and how to effectively utilize it.
  • Internships available at the local, state, regional, federal and international levels.
  • Gain an understanding of the "bigger picture," including political, social, cultural, economic and legal issues confronting today's public, non- profit and health-care agencies.
  • Use technology in your graduate studies and learn how to use technology in your career as a public administrator.
  • Applicants must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited university, a minimum 3.0 GPA and submit GRE scores.
