Purpose

To define when preferred name, versus legal name, should be used within University systems and settings.

Applicability

All faculty, staff and students.

Description

Faculty, staff, and students may choose to identify themselves within the university community with preferred first names that differs from their legal names.

Preferred names will be used across university systems where possible.  The university reserves the right to remove a preferred name if it is used inappropriately, including but not limited to, avoiding a legal obligation or for the purpose of misrepresentation.  The legal first name will continue to be used in university related systems, business processes, and documents, such as reports, financial aid, transcripts, contracts, tax documents, and other records where use of legal first name is required by law or university policy.
