Deciding on and applying for college can be a confusing time, especially for parents. The questions and answers provided on this page are intended to help parents navigate through the college experience.

  • Where is NMU located?

    Northern Michigan University is located in Marquette, Michigan in the Upper Peninsula. It is the largest city in the UP, with a residential population of around 20,000.

  • How large is Northern Michigan University?

    The student population at NMU is currently at 9,123.

  • Who is our family's Admission Counselor?

    Visit the Contact a Counselor page on the Admissions Web site and choose your state.

  • How safe is your campus?

    Northern Michigan University's annual security report includes statistics for the previous three years concerning reported crimes that occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings owned or controlled by Northern Michigan University; and on public property within, or immediately adjacent to and accessible for the campus.

    The report also includes institutional policies concerning campus security, such as policies concerning alcohol and drug use, crime prevention, the reporting of crimes, sexual assault, and other matters.   • What type of programs are offered at the university?

    We offer over 180 different academic programs for students to endeavor in including business, education, art and design, pre-med, pre-engineering and pre-law just to name a few.

  • What are the admission requirements?

    In order to be admitted into Northern students must possess a cumulative high school grade point average of 2.25, with a composite ACT/SAT score of 19/ 960. For students not meeting these requirements, other options are available in some instances.

  • What do you do to accommodate students who coming to campus from distant areas?

    Recognizing that for many students NMU is quite a distance to travel, we have numerous activities for students to get involved in upon arriving to campus including our academic programs, our student based clubs and organizations as well as the various campus and community based events that occur on campus year round. There is plenty to take part in at Northern!

  • What community based attractions exist in Marquette?

    Marquette offers many of the same amenities that you would see in a typical town but on a smaller scale. Those attractions include restaurants, a movie theatre, and plenty of outdoor recreational activities. Learn more at MarquetteCountry.org

  • How does NMU address diversity and inclusion?

    Northern values diversity and we actively work to create an inclusive atmosphere on campus.

  • How much does it cost to do a load of laundry in the residence halls?

    Keep your quarters! Washers and driers are available in each residence hall at no charge. Of course, students will still have to buy detergent and softener.
