Payment Plans

Northern Michigan University offers three options for the payment of tuition and fees and housing charges. The options are designed to assist students and their families meet their financial obligations to the university by the required tuition and fees due dates.

Unless the Easy Pay Plan or Deferral Payment Plan is selected by the due date, students will be responsible for paying tuition, fees and housing payments, less applicable financial aid awards, in full by the tuition due date.

A late fee of $100 per semester will be assessed for tuition and fee payments that are not received by the tuition due date.

Easy Pay Plan

The Easy Pay Plan is designed for students and their families who would like to spread each semester’s tuition, fees and housing payments, less applicable financial aid awards, over four monthly installments. To participate in the Easy Pay Plan, students must
sign up for the plan by the tuition due date each semester.

1. The scheduled payment dates are as follows.

  • Fall semester - on or about Aug. 1, Sept. 1, Oct. 1 and Nov. 1.
  • Winter semester - on or about Jan. 1, Feb. 1, March 1 and April 1.
  • Summer semester - on May 7, June 7 and July 7.

2. There is a $50 non-refundable service charge assessed to the student’s account to participate in the Easy Pay Plan each semester.

3. Each installment payment amount will be calculated by taking the total balance, adding the service charge (one time only per semester), deducting applicable financial aid awards and dividing the amount owed by number of remaining installments.

Example: A student’s tuition, fees and housing charges for the fall semester are $6,507.26. The student elects the Easy Pay Plan and has received $2,500 in financial aid. The total amount of the first installment which is due on or about August 1 would be $1014.31 [$6,507.26 (tuition, fees and housing) + $50 (Easy Pay Plan fee) - $2,500 (financial aid award)] / 4 = $1014.33. Provided no additional charges are incurred or no additional financial aid is awarded, the remaining three installments would be $1014.31 each.

4. Late entry (after tuition due date) into the plan is possible. However, the amounts to be paid for each remaining installment will be higher.

Enrollment in the payment plan is available online 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

A late fee of $25 will be assessed for each installment payment which is not received by the installment due date.

Deferral Payment Plan

The Deferral Plan is designed for students and their families who are expecting, but have not yet finalized financial aid awards and other tuition payment methods by the tuition due date. The plan allows for the deferral of tuition, fees and housing payments as follows.

  • Fall semester - on or about Sept. 1.
  • Winter semester - on or about Feb. 5.
  • Summer semester - on or about June 7.

To participate in the Deferral Plan, students must sign up for the plan each semester by the tuition due date.
Enrollment in the deferral plan is available online 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

1. There is a $75 non-refundable service charge assessed to the student’s account to participate in the Deferral Payment Plan each semester.

2. Late entry (after tuition due date) into the plan is possible. The non-refundable service charge for late entry is $100 and participants may defer tuition, fees and housing payments until on or about October 1 for fall semester and on or about March 1 for winter semester.

A late fee of $25 will be assessed for tuition, fees and housing payments which are not received by the deferred due date.
