Head Weightlifting Coach
Vance Newgard of Homewood, Ill., is the third weightlifting coach since the program was established in 2003. Newgard began Olympic-style lifting in 1998 while playing a number of high school sports. In 2000, he narrowed his focus, lifting fulltime. He’s competed and medaled in numerous national championships and was a resident athlete in the weightlifting program at Northern Michigan University from 2007-2009.
Newgard began his coaching career in 2005 for Kaeler Middle School in Indiana. He also served as strength and conditioning coach for NMU’s track and field, and swimming and diving teams, as well as for the football team at Ishpeming High School in Ishpeming, Michigan. He has also worked with hundreds of local athletes in the Marquette area. In 2009, Newgard was named assistant coach for the team at NMU and served in that role until being named head coach in 2012.
