Marquette, Mich. — Northern Michigan University Olympic Training Site weightlifter Taylor Turner broke two American University records this weekend at the Nike University National Championships in Ogden, Utah.
Turner, of Saint Augustine, Fla., competed in the 58 kg weight class. She won gold in the snatch by lifting 90 kg, beating the old record by 2 kg. She tied the current record in the clean and jerk lifting 108 kg, earning another gold medal. Turner’s combined total of 198 kg broke a second American University Record and earned her a third gold and the title of Female Best Overall Lifter.
Finishing in first place in the 69 kg weight class was Kenny Wilkins of Round Rock, Texas. Wilkins also took home three gold medals with his lifts of 120 kg in the snatch, 148 kg in the clean and jerk and total of 268 kg.
Also earning medals for the NMU-OTS team was Destiny Young of Crystal, Minn. Young competed in the 48 kg weight class. She won a silver medal in the snatch with a lift of 59 kg and a bronze medal in the clean and jerk with a lift of 78 kg.
In team scoring, the NMU-OTS men came in second place with 106 points. Lindenwood Lions placed first with 115 points. East Carolina Weightlifting Club placed third with 67 points and Eastern Tennessee State University Olympic Training Site finished fourth with 41 points.
