Marquette, Mich. — Northern Michigan University Olympic Training Site weightlifter Cecilia Ruiz has been selected to participate in the McNair Scholars program at NMU.
The McNair program is dedicated to supporting students in their pursuit of critical inquiry though research experiences and to fostering productive relationships between students and faculty researchers.
Ruiz, of Ludington, Mich., is a sophomore majoring in neuroscience and hopes to become a neurosurgeon. She is also interested in someday working to discover a cure for Alzheimer’s disease.
She will begin a mentorship with the NMU Biology department during the winter semester and hopes to start research this summer.
“This is a great opportunity and I am honored to be a part of this program,” Ruiz said. “My hope is to start research this summer studying how degenerative cells react to different therapies.”
