MARQUETTE, Mich. — Nine student-athletes from Northern Michigan University’s Olympic Training Site competed at last weekend’s Indiana State Weightlifting Championships in Crown Point. Seven placed first in their respective weight classes.

Coach Van Newgard said of the event, “This wasn’t a collegiate competition. Athletes were all ages, including youth, junior and senior weightlifters from Indiana, Illinois and Michigan. It is a big regional event and I used it as a tune-up for Senior Nationals.”

Marquette native Isabel Dehring placed first in the 69kg junior division with a total of 127kg.

Other first-place finishers, along with their divisions and totals, were: Chris Sanatana of Palm Coast, Fla., 69kg senior, 245kg; Kendra Miller of Plainwell, Mich., 58kg senior, 140kg; Deion Fraire of Colorado Springs, Colo., 69kg junior, 211kg; Clark Ackerman of Bloomington, Ind., 62kg junior, 183kg; Andrew Vrabel of Highland, Ind., 77kg senior, 265kg; and Chris Young of Rochester, Mich., 85kg senior, 273kg.
