MARQUETTE, Mich. —The Northern Michigan University Olympic Training Site Greco-Roman wrestling team earned four medals and placed eight others in the top ten today at the Malar Cup in Vasteras, Sweden.
Randon Miranda, of Palmdale, Calif., won four straight matches to secure his gold medal in the 59 kg bracket. Miranda scored three technical falls and a pin on his march to the podium.
Also winning a gold was Benji Peak of Elkhorn, Wis., in the 63 kg cadet division. Peak defeated eight athletes and only gave up five points during the tournament, with seven of his matches ending by technical fall.
Carter Nielsen, of Foley, Minn., took home a silver medal in the 80 kg division. Nielsen would score three pins and a technical fall before being defeated in the gold-medal match by Rajbek Bisultanov of Denmark, 11-2.
Winning a bronze medal was Spencer Wilson of Holly Springs, N.C., at 98 kg. Wilson faced Elias Kenneryd of Sweden in the bronze-medal match, winning by pin.
The NMU-OTS squad was part of a 27-member United States team of cadet and senior-aged athletes that participated in the two-day tournament. The U.S. won the team title in both the senior and cadet divisions, and was recognized as the combined champion for the senior/cadet divisions.
